Quantitative Research:

To clearly define Playdate's target audience, I identified dog owners aged 18-40 as the primary user group. I conducted a survey to gather data across this age range, focusing on understanding the unique needs and preferences of different segments within the community.

The survey showed that many dog owners felt limited to dog parks as their only option for socializing their pets, which can be risky for dogs with specific needs like anxiety or health sensitivities. This insight highlighted the need for a safe, personalized platform where compatible dogs and their owners can connect—shaping Playdate's mission to provide a more secure, tailored social experience.

Our Mission

The objective of Playdate was to create a platform for dog owners who often face challenges finding compatible playmates for their dogs and addressing specific needs, like temperament or energy levels. Beyond matching dogs for playdates, Playdate fosters a sense of community by connecting local dog owners, providing a space to network, share experiences, and support one another. This app not only promotes the social well-being of dogs but also strengthens local connections among people who share a love for their pets.

Brand Guidelines:

Playdate is a mobile app concept developed as my senior capstone project, designed to connect dog owners by helping them find compatible playmates for their pets. Over 16 weeks, I applied the full design thinking process—from user research and ideation to prototyping and user testing. The project aimed to create an engaging, intuitive experience for both dog owners and their dogs, fostering community and socialization through personalized recommendations.

The final prototype was showcased at The Krannert Art Museum, receiving positive feedback for its playful yet functional interface and thoughtful user experience. Playdate reflects my approach to UX/UI design: combining empathy-driven insights with innovative interaction models to create meaningful connections.

For Playdate, I developed a color scheme inspired by the bright, playful tones found in children’s toys, aiming to create a fun, inviting aesthetic. The vibrant colors—Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow—not only evoke a sense of playfulness but also serve a functional role within the app's decision-making process. Each color corresponds to a specific action: Red for “No,” Green for “Yes,” Yellow to “Go Back,” and Blue to “Favorite.” This intuitive color-coded system streamlines user decisions when selecting potential playmates for their dogs, ensuring a lively and engaging experience that aligns with Playdate's friendly brand identity.

Playdate’s vibrant, playful color scheme is paired with a rounded sans-serif font to create a friendly, accessible look that aligns with modern trends. For the logo, I used universally appealing icons like a ball and treat to resonate with both dog and cat owners. These design choices foster an inviting, inclusive brand identity that reflects Playdate’s mission of connecting pet owners and their companions.

Creating user personas was a foundational step in shaping Playdate’s design. Based on survey data and user interviews, I developed personas that reflected the varied backgrounds, lifestyles, and needs of dog owners within the target age range of 18-40. Each persona embodied specific characteristics, such as lifestyle habits, dog breed preferences, and socialization goals for their pets. For example, one persona might represent a young professional seeking casual, flexible playdates, while another highlights a parent looking for safe, structured interactions for a family-friendly dog.

These personas served as a constant reference point throughout the design process, helping me to align features, interface choices, and user flows with real user motivations and pain points. By keeping these personas in mind, I could make informed design decisions, ensuring that Playdate addressed the true needs and preferences of its users—ultimately creating a more intuitive and empathetic user experience.

In this walkthrough video, I demonstrate Playdate's intuitive onboarding process, guiding users through setting up profiles for their pets. The app uses a familiar, swipe-based interface, allowing users to easily browse potential playmates and make quick decisions. This straightforward layout, combined with playful design elements, ensures a seamless start to their Playdate experience and helps users connect with other dog owners effortlessly.
